I watched Rushmore while falling asleep last night (or not..in fact I was totally brutalised by insomnia all night and I’m not looking forward to being at work for ten and a half hours, especially not on a beautiful sunny day like today.
Anyway, Wes Anderson makes the strangest coming of age movies. It’s the common motif, these strange adults acting like children, even when the adults are supposed to be kids they need to learn to mature….but they also keep their spark.
It’s about regret…asking for forgiveness, but maintaining dignity.
My favourite moment in Rushmore is the very end. The Faces song at the end (Ooh-La-La) just sums up exactly what is needed at the end…it’s perfect closure…and the characters don’t even say anything. Just watching the crowd dance you get that slightly melancholy cheerfulness and a warm feeling in your heart.
I like that in a film.
I feel the better for watching it. Almost like I’ve learnt something from it…and lets bear in mind that I actually fell asleep watching it and only watched the end (three times) this morning.
I have seen it before.
Still…it’s a great film.
I let myself get distracted yesterday and I’m a bit annoyed with myself. What was going to be a day of writing actually got distracted by a trip to the park with excess booze and wastage of money.
Nice day…got to hang out with ‘the lads’ which I haven’t done for a while….but by the end I felt like an idiot. Just because I wasted a day wasted instead of trying to balance myself a little.
I’ll give it another go on Thursday.
Things are strange in these parts you know… Just so you know.
I’ve got a lot of learning to do at the moment.
But then, we all do. That’s part of the point.
Let go of your mistakes and learn the lessons you need to learn.
That way you grow; if not stronger then more whole. Which is probably more important.
